Abstract: In this seminar, we present a high-level summary of the ground motion characterisation model (GMCM) component of the New Zealand National Seismic Hazard Model 2022 Revision. The GMCM represents the ground motion models, logic tree and weights used to forecast earthquake-induced ground motions. The body of work and research consisted of several pieces led by various researchers. A new database of ground motions with associated earthquake and site metadata was developed. This database enabled the development of two New Zealand-specific ground motion models and a quantitative evaluation of candidate ground motion models within the parameter range of instrumentally recorded ground motions. Due to data paucity for hazard-dominant scenarios, additional insights were gained from assessments of the ground motion models in a relative comparison between models, a comparison against specific subsets of data, and investigations into interim probabilistic seismic hazard analysis results. Lastly, the effects of the GMCM update on the NSHM were quantified.
