Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE International Delegation Funding
Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE’s mission of transforming the earthquake resilience of communities and societies through innovative world-class research, education of the next generation and deep national and international collaborations requires strategic partnerships through major international research collaborations. As we look to proactively reconnect with international colleagues and organisations in person, QuakeCoRE plans to support approximately four significant international delegations over the coming two years.
In the first round of International Delegation Funding (May 2023), the following proposals were funded:
International Joint Research Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering (ILEE) – Tongji University, Shanghai, China
Research Area: Disciplinary Theme 2 (DT2): Whole-of-Building Seismic Performance
Delegation Leader: Rick Henry (University of Auckland)
Summary: This funding will support a delegation from Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE to travel to QuakeCoRE Affiliate Organisation the International Joint Research Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering (ILEE) at Tongji University in Shanghai. QuakeCoRE has a long-established relationship with ILEE, however this is heavily reliant on in-person meetings, which are considered essential to maintain existing connections and establishing new collaborations. The relationship has suffered during the pandemic with the lack of travel and delays to collaborative projects. With China only reopening their borders earlier this year, the timing is right for a QuakeCoRE delegation to strengthen our existing partnership and to plan for future collaborative activities. The delegation will not only allow the continued collaboration between established researchers, but will also allow a number of new and emerging researchers to establish connections to support future collaborations. ILEE will provide financial support to the delegation whilst they are in China.

Fault Displacement Hazard Delegation – Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand
Research Area: Disciplinary Theme 1 (DT1): Integrated Seismic Geohazards
Delegation Leader: Tim Stahl (University of Canterbury)
Summary: This funding will support international leaders in fault displacement hazard to come to Aotearoa New Zealand for a multi-day workshop based at the University of Canterbury. The funding will support the attendance of a number of international experts to travel to Aotearoa to provide guidance and help develop research in this area in Aotearoa New Zealand, with goal of developing a funding proposal to further research in this area. This delegation will include aligned funding from Toka Tū Ake EQC.

Transpacific Resilience Seminar, Santiago Chile
Research Area: Inter-disciplinary Programmes 2 and 3: (IP2) Thriving Residential Communities & (IP3) A Resilient Aotearoa New Zealand Transport System
Delegation Leader: Julia Becker (Massey University)
The third Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE funded International Delegation, QuakeCoRE researchers recently took part in a ‘Transpacific Resilience’ seminar in Santiago, Chile earlier this week.
The Delegation to QuakeCoRE Affiliate Organisation CIGIDEN included a series of interactive workshops whereby delegates shared research and experiences from Aotearoa New Zealand and Chile, and discussed future collaborative research.
The experiences of both countries will contribute lessons to improving built environment and infrastructural resilience to earthquakes.
