Abstract: 

Immediately following an earthquake event, social media users often post specific details about impacts that have occurred in their neighborhoods. These details may refer to damage or destruction to buildings, utilities, transport networks or injuries and deaths of people or animals. Following an analysis of types of disaster impacts described in the literature, we have developed a scheme for representing impact data, and methods for extracting that data from textual social media (e.g. Twitter) posts.  We are also developing methods to automatically extract rich information from descriptions of the location of the impacts (e.g. across the road from St Marys church), in order to more accurately map them to support emergency response in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake.  This seminar will discuss progress to date on this work, and present a prototype map web application to map the impacts.

Bio:

Associate Professor Kristin Stock leads the Massey Geoinformatics Collaboratory at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand. Her research focusses on the development of automated methods to extract and map content from text in multiple application areas, including disaster management and ecology.  She has qualifications in surveying, urban and regional planning and computer science, has worked in academia, government and the private sector in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and has led several international projects on the modelling, management and integration of geographic data.  She currently leads the MBIE funded BioWhere project and the QuakeCoRE funded QuakeText Project.
